挨 — ái

1. to suffer; to endure; to receive (something negative) — also used to mean to be subjected to (e.g., 挨打 'to get beaten')

   他昨天挨了老师的批评。 tā zuótiān āi le lǎoshī de pīpíng — He was criticized by the teacher yesterday.

2. to endure through hardship; to get by (used with duration or difficulty); also to stall or delay (colloquial)

   现在钱紧，只能挨过这个月。 xiànzài qián jǐn zhǐnéng āiguò zhège yuè — Money is tight now; we can only get through this month.
