挡 — dǎng

1. to resist; to obstruct; to get in the way of

   他用手挡住了迎面飞来的球。 tāyòng shǒu dǎngzhù le yíngmiàn fēilái de qiú — He used his hand to block the ball coming toward him.

2. to cover (so as to shield); to keep off

   给机器挡上一块布，防止灰尘进入。 gěi jīqì dǎng shàng yīkuài bù fángzhǐ huīchén jìnrù — Put a cloth over the machine to prevent dust from getting in.

3. gear (in a vehicle's transmission) — e.g., 一挡 first gear

   起步时先挂一挡，然后换二挡。 qǐbù shí xiān guà yī dǎng ránhòu huàn èr dǎng — When starting off, first put it in first gear, then shift to second.
