1. to point at; to indicate; to refer to

   他说的话指的是公司未来的发展方向。 tā shuō dehuà zhǐ de shì gōngsī wèilái de fāzhǎn fāngxiàng — What he said referred to the company's future development direction.

2. finger; toe; (also of gloves) finger

   他用一个指头按住屏幕。 tāyòng yígè zhǐtou ànzhù píngmù — He pressed the screen with one finger.

3. to depend on; to count on; to rely upon

   我们指望你按时完成这项工作。 wǒmen zhǐwàng nǐ ànshí wánchéng zhèxiàng gōngzuò — We are counting on you to finish this work on time.

4. (of hair) to stand on end; to bristle

   听到怪声，他的汗毛都指了起来。 tīngdào guàishēng tā de hànmáo dōu zhǐ le qǐlái — Hearing the strange sound, his hair stood on end.
