挂钩 — guàgōu

1. hook; latch hook; coupling (device on which to hang or hook something)

   门上装了一个新的挂钩，可以挂外套。 mén shàngzhuāng le yígè xīn de guàgōu kěyǐ guà wàitào — A new hook was installed on the door for hanging coats.

2. to couple; to hook together; to connect physically (join two items)

   把两节车厢挂钩起来，然后开始试运行。 bǎ liǎng jiéchēxiāng guàgōu qǐlái ránhòu kāishǐ shìyùnxíng — Couple the two carriages together, then begin the test run.

3. (figurative) to link; to peg; to tie (one thing to another, e.g. policy, payments, remuneration to performance or inflation)

   政府决定将养老金挂钩于通货膨胀率。 zhèngfǔ juédìng jiāng yǎnglǎojīn guàgōu yú tōnghuòpéngzhànglǜ — The government decided to peg pensions to the inflation rate.

4. (esp. following 与/與 + entity) to establish contact with; (TW) to collude with (an entity)

   调查显示他曾与竞争对手挂钩，收受回扣。 diàochá xiǎnshì tā céng yǔ jìngzhēngduìshǒu guàgōu shōushòu huíkòu — The investigation showed he had colluded with competitors and taken kickbacks.
