挂 — guà

1. to hang; to suspend (from a hook etc)

   她把外套挂在门后。 tā bǎ wàitào guà zài mén hòu — She hung her coat behind the door.

2. to hang up (the phone)

   别挂，我还没说完。 bié guà wǒ hái méi shuōwán — Don't hang up; I'm not finished talking.

3. (of a line) to be dead; to be disconnected

   电话突然就挂了，可能是线路问题。 diànhuà tūrán jiù guà le kěnéng shì xiànlù wèntí — The call suddenly dropped; maybe it's a line problem.

4. to be worried; to be concerned

   别挂在心上，这件事会过去的。 bié guà zài xīnshàng zhèjiàn shì huì guòqù de — Don't worry about it; this will pass.

5. (dialect) to make a phone call

   我去挂个电话，马上回来。 wǒ qù guà gè diànhuà mǎshàng huílái — I'll make a quick call and come right back.

6. to register (at a hospital); to make an appointment (with a doctor)

   早上九点去医院挂号，排队的人很多。 zǎoshàng jiǔdiǎn qù yīyuàn guàhào páiduì de rén hěnduō — Go to the hospital to register at 9 a.m.; there are many people in line.

7. (slang) to kill; to die; to be finished; to fail (an exam)

   他上次考试挂了，得重修这门课。 tā shàngcì kǎoshì guà le dé chóngxiū zhè mén kè — He failed the exam last time and has to retake the course.

8. classifier for sets or clusters of objects (e.g., a bunch of bananas)

   桌上放着一挂香蕉。 zhuōshàng fàng zhe yī guà xiāngjiāo — There is a bunch of bananas on the table.
