持 — chí

1. to hold (in one's hand); to carry

   请把杯子持稳。 qǐng bǎ bēizi chí wěn — Please hold the cup steady.

2. to grasp; to seize; to get a hold of (an idea, object)

   他试图持住手中的绳子，却滑落了。 tā shìtú chí zhù shǒuzhōng de shéngzi què huáluò le — He tried to grasp the rope in his hand, but it slipped away.

3. to support; to hold up (physically or figuratively)

   大家齐心持起了倒下的旗杆。 dàjiā qíxīn chí qǐ le dǎoxià de qígān — Everyone held up the fallen flagpole together.

4. to maintain; to keep (a state, standard)

   双方持中立态度，不愿表态。 shuāngfāng chí zhōnglì tàidù bù yuàn biǎotài — Both sides maintain a neutral attitude and refuse to take a position.

5. to persevere; to persist; to carry on

   不管多难，你都要持之以恒地坚持下去。 bùguǎn duōnán nǐ dōu yào chízhīyǐhéng dì jiānchíxiàqù — No matter how difficult, you must persevere with consistency.

6. to manage; to run; to control (an operation or organization)

   他被任命主持这个新项目的管理工作。 tā bèi rènmìng zhǔchí zhège xīn xiàngmù dì guǎnlǐgōngzuò — He was appointed to manage this new project.
