拱 — gǒng

1. to cup one's hands in salute (greet with cupped hands)

   他向长辈拱手致意。 tā xiàng zhǎngbèi gǒngshǒu zhìyì — He cupped his hands to greet the elders.

2. to surround; to enclose (from all sides)

   群山把小村庄拱了起来。 qúnshān bǎ xiǎo cūnzhuāng gǒng le qǐlái — The mountains surround the little village.

3. to arch (to bend into an arch)

   树枝拱成了一个天然的拱门。 shùzhī gǒng chéng le yígè tiānrán de gǒngmén — The branches arched into a natural archway.

4. to dig the earth with the snout (of an animal); root (with nose)

   猪在院子里拱土找东西吃。 zhū zài yuànzi lǐ gǒng tǔ zhǎo dōngxī chī — The pig was rooting in the yard for something to eat.

5. arched; in the shape of an arch

   那座桥是拱形的，很有特色。 nà zuò qiáo shì gǒngxíng de hěn yǒu tèsè — That bridge is arched and quite distinctive.
