招 — zhāo

1. to beckon; to wave someone over

   他招我过去，告诉我一个好消息。 tā zhāo wǒ guòqù gàosù wǒ yígè hǎoxiāoxī — He beckoned me over and told me some good news.

2. to recruit; to hire; to take on (people)

   公司最近在招新员工。 gōngsī zuìjìn zài zhāo xīn yuángōng — The company is recruiting new staff recently.

3. to provoke; to attract (trouble, criticism); to incur

   他的态度很可能会招来更多麻烦。 tā de tàidù hěn kěnéng huì zhāolái gèngduō máfán — His attitude is likely to incur more trouble.

4. contagious; infectious

   这种病很容易招人传染。 zhèzhǒng bìng hěn róngyì zhāorén chuánrǎn — This kind of disease is easily contagious to people.

5. a move (in chess or a game); a maneuver; a trick; a device

   这是个老招，不要再上当了。 zhè shì gè lǎo zhāo búyào zài shàngdàng le — That's an old trick; don't fall for it again.

6. to confess; to admit (often used in compounds like 招供)

   嫌疑人在审讯中招了罪行。 xiányírén zài shěnxùn zhòngzhāo le zuìxíng — The suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.
