拔 — bá

1. to pull up; to pull out (by hand)

   他把杂草都拔掉了。 tā bǎ zácǎo dōu bádiào le — He pulled out all the weeds.

2. to pull out by suction; to draw out (liquid)

   医生用吸管把伤口里的脓液拔出。 yīshēng yòng xīguǎn bǎ shāngkǒu lǐ de nóngyè báchū — The doctor used a suction tube to draw out the pus from the wound.

3. to select; to pick (a person for a position, team, etc.)

   教练把他拔为替补队员。 jiàoliàn bǎ tā bá wèi tìbǔduìyuán — The coach picked him as a substitute player.

4. to stand out; to surpass; to be conspicuously better

   他的表现实在拔尖。 tā de biǎoxiàn shízài bájiān — His performance really stands out.

5. to seize; to pull (something) away forcefully

   他一把把手机拔走了。 tā yībǎ bǎ shǒujī bá zǒu le — He snatched the phone away in one pull.
