拍 — pāi

1. to pat; to tap gently

   她轻轻地拍了拍宝宝的背。 tā qīngqīngdì pāilepāi bǎobǎo de bèi — She gently patted the baby's back.

2. to clap (one's hands); to applaud

   观众大声拍手表示欢迎。 guānzhòng dàshēng pāishǒu biǎoshì huānyíng — The audience clapped loudly to show welcome.

3. to slap; to hit with an open hand

   他气得一巴掌拍在桌子上。 tā qì dé yībāzhǎng pāi zài zhuōzi shàng — He angrily slapped the table.

4. to swat (insect); to smack

   他用报纸拍死一只苍蝇。 tāyòng bàozhǐ pāi sǐ yīzhī cāngyíng — He swatted a fly with a newspaper.

5. to take (a photo); to photograph

   请帮我拍一张照片。 qǐng bāng wǒ pāi yīzhāng zhàopiān — Please help me take a photo.

6. to shoot (a film); to film

7. racket (sports equipment)

8. beat (in music); rhythmic strike

   鼓手的拍子很有力，带动全场气氛。 gǔshǒu de pāizi hěn yǒulì dàidòng quánchǎng qìfēn — The drummer's beat is powerful and energizes the whole venue.
