拉 — lā

1. to pull; to drag; to draw

   请你把那箱子拉到门口。 qǐng nǐ bǎ nà xiāngzi lādào ménkǒu — Please pull that box to the door.

2. to play (a bowed instrument)

   他从小就会拉小提琴。 tā cóngxiǎo jiù huì lā xiǎotíqín — He has played the violin since childhood.

3. to chat; to shoot the breeze (colloquial)

   我们坐在公园里拉了半天家常。 wǒmen zuòzài gōngyuán lǐlā le bàntiān jiācháng — We sat in the park and chatted about daily life for a long time.

4. (colloquial) to empty one's bowels; to take a shit

   他在外面拉了一会儿才回家。 tā zài wàimiàn lā le yīhuìer cái huíjiā — He was outside taking a shit for a while before coming home.

拉 — lá

1. to make a cut in (something); to slit; to gash; to slash

   刀子不小心把衣服拉了一道口子。 dāozi bùxiǎo xīn bǎ yīfú lā le yīdào kǒuzi — The knife accidentally slit a hole in the clothes.

拉 — là

1. variant character usage: used in the name 拉拉蛄 (la4 la4 gu3); variant of 落 (to fall)

   夏天田边常能听见拉拉蛄的叫声。 xiàtiān tiánbiān cháng néng tīngjiàn lālā gū de jiàoshēng — In summer you can often hear the chirping of mole crickets by the fields.
