拆 — chāi

1. to tear open (e.g. a letter or package)

   他把信拆开看了。 tā bǎ xìn chāikāi kàn le — He tore open the letter and read it.

2. to tear down; to demolish (a building or structure)

   那片旧楼将要被拆掉。 nà piàn jiùlóu jiāngyào bèi chāidiào — Those old buildings are going to be torn down.

3. to take apart; to disassemble (an object into pieces)

   他把旧收音机拆开修理。 tā bǎ jiù shōuyīnjī chāikāi xiūlǐ — He took the old radio apart to repair it.

4. to open (by removing packaging or seals)

   请把快递拆开看看有没有损坏。 qǐng bǎ kuàidì chāikāi kànkàn yǒuméiyǒu sǔnhuài — Please open the delivery and check if there's any damage.
