抹 — mǒ

1. to smear (a liquid or paste on a surface)

   妈妈在面包上抹了果酱。 māmā zài miànbāo shàng mǒ le guǒjiàng — Mom spread jam on the bread.

2. to wipe (away); to remove by rubbing

   他把眼泪抹掉了，不想被人看到。 tā bǎ yǎnlèi mǒdiào le bùxiǎng bèi rén kàndào — He wiped away his tears; he didn't want to be seen.

3. to erase; to delete (a mark or writing)

   老师把黑板上的错误用布抹掉了。 lǎoshī bǎ hēibǎn shàng de cuòwù yòngbù mǒdiào le — The teacher erased the mistakes on the blackboard with a cloth.

4. classifier for wisps of cloud, light beams, smoke, etc. (a streak/strand)

   天空中有一抹晚霞，格外美丽。 tiānkōng zhōng yǒu yīmǒ wǎnxiá géwài měilì — There is a streak of sunset clouds in the sky, especially beautiful.

抹 — mā

1. to wipe; to rub off

   她用毛巾把桌子抹干净。 tā yòng máojīn bǎ zhuōzi mǒ gānjìng — She wiped the table clean with a towel.

抹 — mò

1. to plaster or daub (a surface); to spread plaster

   工人们在墙上抹了一层灰泥。 gōngrén men zài qiángshàng mǒ le yīcéng huīní — The workers plastered a layer of mortar on the wall.

2. to go around; to skirt (figurative or literal)

   我们抹着路边走，避开了拥挤的人群。 wǒmen mǒ zhe lùbiān zǒu bìkāi le yōngjǐ de rénqún — We edged along the roadside to avoid the crowded people.
