抵 — dǐ

1. to press against; to support; to prop up

   他用手抵着门不让它关上。 tāyòng shǒu dǐ zhe mén bùràng tā guānshàng — He pressed his hand against the door to keep it from closing.

2. to resist; to withstand

   这种材料能抵住高温和腐蚀。 zhèzhǒng cáiliào néng dǐzhù gāowēn hé fǔshí — This material can resist high temperatures and corrosion.

3. to be equal to; to match; to balance; to offset

   他的努力抵得上别人几年的经验。 tā de nǔlì dǐde shàng biérén jǐnián de jīngyàn — His effort is equal to several years of someone else's experience.

4. to mortgage; to pledge as security

   他把房子抵给银行以换取贷款。 tā bǎ fángzi dǐ gěi yínháng yǐ huànqǔ dàikuǎn — He mortgaged the house to the bank to obtain a loan.

5. to make up for; to compensate for

   他迟到后加班抵补了缺席的工作时间。 tā chídào hòu jiābān dǐbǔ le quēxí de gōngzuò shíjiān — After being late he worked overtime to make up the missed hours.

6. to arrive at; to reach

   天色渐晚，我们终于抵了目的地。 tiānsè jiàn wǎn wǒmen zhōngyú dǐ le mùdìdì — Night was falling; we finally reached our destination.

7. to clap (one's hands) lightly (expressing delight) (Taiwan pr. [zhi3])

   孩子听到好消息，高兴得在旁边轻轻抵了几下手。 háizi tīngdào hǎoxiāoxī gāoxìng dé zài pángbiān qīngqīng dǐ le jǐxià shǒu — Hearing the good news, the child clapped lightly a few times beside them.
