抱 — bào

1. to hold; to carry (in one's arms); to hug; to embrace

   妈妈抱着孩子走进房间。 māmā bào zhe háizi zǒujìn fángjiān — The mother carried the child into the room.

2. to surround; to encompass

   四面群山抱着这个小村庄。 sìmiàn qúnshān bào zhe zhège xiǎo cūnzhuāng — Mountains on all sides surround this little village.

3. to cherish; to hold dear (an idea, person, hope)

   他一直抱着对未来的希望。 tā yìzhí bào zhe duì wèilái de xīwàng — He has always cherished hope for the future.

4. (colloquial) (of clothes) to fit nicely

   这条裤子很抱腿，穿着挺合身。 zhètiáo kùzi hěn bào tuǐ chuānzhe tǐng héshēn — These pants hug the legs and fit nicely.
