披 — pī

1. to drape (over one's shoulders); to put on (a shawl, cloak) over the shoulders

   她披了一件薄外套就出门了。 tā pī le yījiàn báo wàitào jiù chūmén le — She draped a thin coat over her shoulders and went out.

2. to open; to spread out (an object like a map, book, or fan)

   他把地图在桌上披开。 tā bǎ dìtú zài zhuōshàng pīkāi — He spread the map open on the table.

3. to unroll; to unfurl (e.g., a scroll or banner)

   仪式上，长者缓缓披开古卷，宣读内容。 yíshì shàng zhǎngzhě huǎnhuǎn pīkāi gǔ juǎn xuāndú nèiróng — At the ceremony, the elder slowly unfurled the ancient scroll and read its contents.

4. to split open; to part (something that was closed or sealed)

   他小心地把信封披开。 tā xiǎoxīn dì bǎ xìnfēng pīkāi — He carefully tore the envelope open.

5. to spread out; to cover over (an area) — to lay something over a surface

   他把外套披在孩子身上，让他不再冷。 tā bǎ wàitào pīzài háizi shēnshàng ràng tā bùzài lěng — He laid his coat over the child so he wouldn't be cold anymore.
