1. to sound an alarm; to trigger an alarm

   火灾报警器响了，大家赶快撤离。 huǒzāi bàojǐngqì xiǎng le dàjiā gǎnkuài chèlí — The fire alarm went off; everyone evacuate quickly.

2. to report something to the police; to call the police

   他发现钱包被偷，马上去派出所报警。 tā fāxiàn qiánbāo bèi tōu mǎshàng qù pàichūsuǒ bàojǐng — He found his wallet stolen and immediately went to the police station to report it.
