折 — shé

1. to snap; to break (a stick, a bone etc.)

   他一不小心把树枝折断了。 tā yíbùxiǎoxīn bǎ shùzhī zhéduàn le — He accidentally snapped the branch.

2. to sustain a loss (in business); to take a hit

   这笔买卖公司折了不少。 zhèbǐ mǎimài gōngsī zhé le bùshǎo — The company suffered considerable losses on that deal.

折 — zhé

1. to break; to fracture; to snap (general physical sense)

   风太大，把树枝都折断了。 fēng tàidà bǎ shùzhī dōu zhéduàn le — The wind was so strong that it snapped the branches.

2. to bend; to twist; to change direction; to turn

   小路在那儿折向山后。 xiǎolù zài nàér zhé xiàng shānhòu — The path turns toward the back of the mountain there.

3. to convert into (currency); discount; rebate; a tenth (in price) — used in pricing/finance

   这家店冬季商品折价三成。 zhèjiā diàn dōngjì shāngpǐn zhéjià sānchéng — This shop discounts winter goods by 30%.

4. classifier for theatrical scenes; (measure word for scenes/acts)

   京剧这一折很著名。 jīngjù zhè yīzhé hěn zhùmíng — This scene of the Peking opera is very famous.

5. to fold; (also: accounts book)

   请把这张纸折好再放进信封。 qǐng bǎ zhè zhāng zhǐ zhé hǎo zài fàngjìn xìnfēng — Please fold this paper neatly before putting it into the envelope.

1. to turn sth over; to turn upside down; to tip sth out (of a container)

   把盒子折过来看看里面有什么。 bǎ hézi zhé guòlái kànkàn lǐmiàn yǒu shénme — Turn the box over and see what's inside.
