投 — tóu

1. to throw (something in a particular direction; e.g., ball, javelin, grenade)

   他把球狠狠地投出去。 tā bǎ qiú hěnhěn dì tóuchūqù — He threw the ball out forcefully.

2. to cast (a ballot); to vote

   选民到投票站去投了票。 xuǎnmín dào tóupiàozhàn qù tóu le piào — Voters went to the polling station to cast their votes.

3. to cast (a glance); to send out (a shadow)

   她投给我一个意味深长的眼神。 tā tóu gěi wǒ yígè yìwèishēncháng de yǎnshén — She cast a meaningful look at me.

4. to put in (money for investment, a coin to operate a slot machine)

   他向基金会投了十万元。 tā xiàng jījīnhuì tóu le shíwànyuán — He invested 100,000 yuan in the fund.

5. to send (a letter, a manuscript)

   请把稿件投到编辑部审核。 qǐng bǎ gǎojiàn tóudào biānjíbù shěnhé — Please submit the manuscript to the editorial department for review.

6. to throw oneself into (a river, well) — to commit suicide

   他绝望地投河自尽。 tā juéwàng dì tóuhézìjìn — In despair he threw himself into the river to die.

7. to go to; to seek refuge; to place oneself into the hands of (e.g., submit to someone's care or authority)

   战乱中很多难民投靠邻国。 zhànluàn zhōng hěnduō nànmín tóukào línguó — During the war many refugees sought shelter in neighboring countries.

8. (coll.) to rinse (clothes) in water

   刚洗好的衬衫我要再投一遍水。 gāng xǐhǎo de chènshān wǒ yào zài tóu yībiàn shuǐ — I'll rinse the freshly washed shirt once more.
