扣 — kòu

1. to fasten; to button; to buckle

   把外套扣好，别着凉。 bǎ wàitào kòuhǎo bié zháoliáng — Button up your coat so you don't catch a cold.

2. button; buckle; clasp (the physical object)

   这件衬衫少了一个扣。 zhèjiàn chènshān shǎo le yígè kòu — This shirt is missing a button.

3. to arrest; to detain; to confiscate

   警方扣了涉案的财物并带走了嫌疑人。 jǐngfāng kòu le shèàn de cáiwù bìng dàizǒu le xiányírén — The police confiscated the property involved and took away the suspect.

4. to deduct (money); to withhold; to discount

   公司每月从薪水中扣税和保险费。 gōngsī měiyuè cóng xīnshuǐ zhōng kòushuì hé bǎoxiǎnfèi — The company deducts taxes and insurance from the salary each month.

5. to knock; to hit; to dunk or spike (in basketball)

   他在比赛最后一刻扣篮得分，赢得了比赛。 tā zài bǐsài zuìhòu yíkè kòulán défēn yíngdé le bǐsài — He dunked in the last moment of the game and won the match.

6. to cover (with a bowl, lid, etc.); to cap

   妈妈把热汤扣上碗盖，怕冷风跑进去。 māmā bǎ rètāng kòushàng wǎn gài pà lěngfēng pǎo jìnqù — Mom covered the hot soup with a bowl lid, afraid the cold wind would get in.

7. (figurative) to tag or label someone; to attribute a label

   别急着扣帽子，先了解事情的真相。 biéjí zhe kòumàozi xiān liǎojiě shìqíng de zhēnxiàng — Don't be quick to label someone; first understand the truth.

8. (Taiwan, loanword) code (e.g., access/code word)

   输入扣码就可以领取优惠。 shūrù kòu mǎ jiù kěyǐ lǐngqǔ yōuhuì — Enter the code to receive the discount.
