扛 — káng

1. to carry on one's shoulder; (fig.) to take on (a burden, duty, responsibility)

   他一个人扛起了照顾老人的责任。 tā yígè rén kángqǐ le zhàogù lǎorén de zérèn — He single-handedly took on the responsibility of caring for the elderly.

扛 — gāng

1. to raise aloft with both hands; (of two or more people) to carry something together

   他们合力把旧沙发扛进了屋里。 tāmen hélì bǎ jiù shāfā kángjìn le wūlǐ — They together carried the old sofa into the room.
