打发 — dǎfa

1. to send or assign someone to do something; dispatch (sb)

   经理把他打发去联系客户。 jīnglǐ bǎ tā dǎfā qù liánxì kèhù — The manager sent him to contact the client.

2. to make someone leave (often politely or dismissively); send someone off

   天已经晚了，我就把客人打发回家了。 tiān yǐjīng wǎn le wǒ jiù bǎ kèrén dǎfā huíjiā le — It was late, so I sent the guests home.

3. to pass the time; to while away (time)

   星期天我在家看书，打发时间。 xīngqītiān wǒ zàijiā kànshū dǎfā shíjiān — On Sunday I stayed home reading to pass the time.

4. (old) to make arrangements; to transact affairs

   这件事你去打发一下，安排妥当就好。 zhèjiàn shì nǐ qù dǎfā yīxià ānpái tuǒdàng jiù hǎo — Go and take care of this matter — just make sure it's properly arranged.

5. (old) to bestow alms or give money/food to the poor

   每逢春节，老爷都会打发门口的乞丐。 měiféng chūnjié lǎoyé dū huì dǎfā ménkǒu de qǐgài — Every Spring Festival, the master would give alms to the beggars at his gate.
