扒 — bā

1. to peel; to skin (remove outer layer)

   把土豆的皮扒掉再煮。 bǎ tǔdòu de pí bā diào zài zhǔ — Peel the potatoes before boiling them.

2. to skin (an animal); to flay

   猎人把兔子的皮扒了带回去。 lièrén bǎ tùzi de pí bā le dàihuíqù — The hunter skinned the rabbit and took it back.

3. to tear down; to pull down (a structure)

   他们决定把那座旧房子扒掉重建。 tāmen juédìng bǎ nà zuò jiù fángzi bā diào chóngjiàn — They decided to tear down the old house and rebuild.

4. to cling to; to cling while climbing (grab on to)

   小猫紧紧地扒在窗台上不肯下来。 xiǎomāo jǐnjǐn dì bā zài chuāngtáishàng bùkěn xiàlái — The kitten clung tightly to the windowsill and wouldn't come down.

5. to dig (with hands); to rake/clear by hand

   工人们在工地上扒土准备打地基。 gōngrén men zài gōngdì shàng bātǔ zhǔnbèi dǎ dìjī — Workers were digging soil at the site to prepare the foundation.

扒 — pá

1. to rake up; to scrape together (loose material)

   他用耙子把落叶扒到树下。 tāyòng pázi bǎ luòyè bā dào shùxià — He used a rake to gather the fallen leaves under the tree.

2. to steal (colloquial)

   街上有人扒钱包，大家小心。 jiēshàng yǒurén bā qiánbāo dàjiā xiǎoxīn — There are pickpockets on the street; everyone be careful.

3. to braise (cook slowly with sauce)

   这道菜要先扒一下再炖，味道更好。 zhè dàocài yào xiān bā yīxià zài dùn wèidào gènghǎo — This dish should be briefly seared then braised; it tastes better.

4. to crawl; to move by crawling

   宝宝还不会走，只能在地上扒来扒去。 bǎobǎo hái búhuì zǒu zhǐnéng zài dìshàng bā lái bā qù — The baby can't walk yet and can only crawl around on the floor.
