扑 — pū

1. to pounce on; to throw oneself at (a person or thing suddenly)

   狗一见陌生人就扑上去。 gǒu yī jiàn mòshēngrén jiù pūshàngqù — The dog pounced on strangers as soon as it saw them.

2. to devote one's energies to; to throw oneself into (a task, cause)

   他扑在工作上，几乎忘了吃饭。 tā pū zài gōngzuò shàng jīhū wàng le chīfàn — He threw himself into his work and almost forgot to eat.

3. to flap; to flutter (wings, clothes, curtains)

   窗帘在风中扑来扑去。 chuānglián zài fēng zhōng pūláipūqù — The curtains fluttered back and forth in the wind.

4. to dab; to pat (lightly touch repeatedly)

   妈妈用手轻轻扑宝宝的背，帮他拍嗝。 māmā yòng shǒu qīngqīng pū bǎobǎo de bèi bāng tā pāi gé — The mother gently patted the baby's back to help him burp.

5. to bend over; to stoop (body movement)

   他扑下身去捡起地上的东西。 tā pū xiàshēn qù jiǎnqǐ dìshàng de dōngxī — He bent over to pick up the thing on the ground.
