手 — shǒu

1. hand (body part)

   我用手拿起了那本书。 wǒ yòng shǒu náqǐ le nàběnshū — I picked up that book with my hand.

2. (formal) to hold; to take in the hand

   请把文件交到我手中。 qǐng bǎ wénjiàn jiāodào wǒ shǒuzhōng — Please hand the documents to me.

3. person engaged in a certain type of work; worker (e.g., 师手 'skilled worker')

   厨房里有几个帮手在准备食材。 chúfáng lǐ yǒu jǐgè bāngshǒu zài zhǔnbèi shí cái — There are a few assistants in the kitchen preparing ingredients.

4. person skilled in a certain type of work; expert; artisan

   他是裁缝界的能手。 tā shì cáiféng jiè de néngshǒu — He is a skilled tailor in the sewing world.

5. personally; in person

   这件事我会亲手处理。 zhèjiàn shì wǒhuì qīnshǒu chǔlǐ — I will handle this personally.

6. convenient; handy

   把工具放在手边比较方便。 bǎ gōngjù fàngzài shǒubiān bǐjiào fāngbiàn — It's more convenient to keep the tools at hand.

7. classifier for skill-level or groups of people (archaic/limited)

   他是行家中的一手。 tā shì hángjia zhōng de yīshǒu — He is a top person/expert among insiders.
