扇 — shān

1. to fan (to move air with a fan)

   他用报纸扇了扇，看起来很热。 tāyòng bàozhǐ shàn le shàn kànqǐlái hěn rè — He fanned himself with a newspaper; he looked hot.

2. to slap someone on the face

   听到那话他气得一把扇了她。 tīngdào nà huà tā qì dé yībǎ shàn le tā — Hearing that, he got so angry he slapped her.

扇 — shàn

1. fan (folding or handheld fan)

   她拿出一把漂亮的扇子扇风。 tā náchū yībǎ piàoliàng de shànzi shānfēng — She took out a pretty fan to fan herself.

2. a sliding/hinged/detachable flat part (e.g., a window or door leaf, shutter, panel)

   这扇窗不能打开，要修理一下。 zhè shàn chuāng bùnéng dǎkāi yào xiūlǐ yīxià — This window pane/leaf won't open; it needs repair.

3. classifier for flat objects like doors, windows, paintings, sheets

   房间有三扇窗，两个门。 fángjiān yǒu sānshàn chuāng liǎnggè mén — The room has three windows and two doors.
