戒 — jiè

1. to guard against; to exhort; to admonish or warn

   老师戒学生不要作弊。 lǎoshī jiè xuéshēng búyào zuòbì — The teacher warned/admonished the students not to cheat.

2. to give up or stop doing something (habit)

   他已戒烟三个月了。 tā yǐ jièyān sāngè yuè le — He has quit smoking for three months.

3. Buddhist monastic discipline; precepts

   出家人要守戒。 chūjiārén yào shǒujiè — Monastics must observe the precepts.

4. ring (for a finger)

   她把母亲留下的金戒戴在手上。 tā bǎ mǔqīn liúxià de jīn jiè dài zài shǒushàng — She wore the gold ring her mother left her on her hand.
