惨 — cǎn

1. miserable; wretched; (feeling or situation that is very bad)

   失业后他的生活很惨。 shīyè hòu tā de shēnghuó hěncǎn — After losing his job, his life was very miserable.

2. cruel; inhuman (describing actions or behavior)

   那场惩罚太惨，不值得同情的人也受到了伤害。 nàchǎng chéngfá tài cǎn bùzhí dé tóngqíng de rén yě shòudào le shānghài — That punishment was too cruel; even people who didn't deserve sympathy were harmed.

3. disastrous; tragic (describing events or outcomes)

   那场火灾造成了惨重的损失。 nàchǎng huǒzāi zàochéng le cǎnzhòng de sǔnshī — That fire caused disastrous losses.

4. dim; gloomy; bleak (describing appearance, mood, or prospects)

   天气灰暗，城市看起来很惨。 tiānqì huīàn chéngshì kànqǐlái hěncǎn — The weather was dull and the city looked bleak.
