快 — kuài

1. rapid; quick

   他跑得很快。 tā pǎo dé hěnkuài — He runs very fast.

2. speed; rate

   学习的快慢因人而异。 xuéxí de kuàimàn yīnrénéryì — The speed of learning varies from person to person.

3. soon; almost (indicating an imminent action/state)

   快要下雨了。 kuàiyào xiàyǔ le — It's going to rain soon.

4. to make haste; to hurry

   我们得快一点儿，否则要迟到了。 wǒmen dé kuài yìdiǎnér fǒuzé yào chídào le — We must hurry a bit, otherwise we'll be late.

5. clever; sharp (of mind or tools)

   这把刀很快，切东西很利索。 zhè bǎ dāo hěnkuài qiè dōngxī hěn lìsuǒ — This knife is very sharp; it cuts things cleanly.

6. forthright; plainspoken

   他说话很快，不拐弯抹角。 tā shuōhuà hěnkuài bù guǎiwānmòjiǎo — He speaks directly; he doesn't beat around the bush.

7. gratified; pleased; pleasant

   听到这个好消息，大家心里很畅快。 tīngdào zhège hǎoxiāoxī dàjiā xīnlǐ hěn chàngkuài — Hearing the good news, everyone felt pleased and at ease.
