忌 — jì

1. to be jealous of; to envy

   他从小就忌别人比他强。 tā cóngxiǎo jiù jì biérén bǐ tā qiáng — Since childhood, he has been jealous of anyone stronger than him.

2. to fear; to dread

   他忌惮失败，不敢轻举妄动。 tā jìdàn shībài bùgǎn qīngjǔwàngdòng — He fears failure and does not dare act rashly.

3. to have scruples about; to avoid because of taboo or prohibition

   老人很忌别人在新年说不吉利的话。 lǎorén hěn jì biérén zài xīnnián shuō bù jílì dehuà — The elderly strongly avoid having others say unlucky words during the New Year.

4. to avoid or abstain from; to give up (something)

   医生建议他忌烟忌酒，注意饮食。 yīshēng jiànyì tā jì yān jìjiǔ zhùyì yǐnshí — The doctor advised him to avoid smoking and alcohol and watch his diet.
