心疼 — xīnténg

1. to feel sorry for someone; to pity; to be distressed about someone's suffering

   他听到孩子受委屈的事，心疼得要命。 tā tīngdào háizi shòuwěiqū de shì xīnténg dé yàomìng — When he heard the child had been wronged, he felt terribly sorry.

2. to love dearly; feel an aching affection for someone (often physically worried about them)

   看到孩子摔倒，她心疼得赶紧跑过去抱起他。 kàndào háizi shuāidǎo tā xīnténg dé gǎnjǐn pǎo guòqù bàoqǐ tā — Seeing the child fall, she, feeling distressed with affection, quickly ran over to pick him up.

3. to regret or be upset about something (e.g., waste, loss); to feel bad or grudgingly resentful

   看着剩菜被倒掉，他心疼钱和粮食被浪费。 kànzhe shèngcài bèi dàodiào tā xīnténg qián hé liángshí bèi làngfèi — Watching the leftovers being thrown away, he felt bad about money and food being wasted.
