得 — dé

  1. to obtain; to get; to gain (including 'to catch' a disease)

    他昨天得了很多礼物。 tā zuótiān dé le hěnduō lǐwù — He received many gifts yesterday.

  2. to allow; to permit

    未得老师允许,不得离开教室。 wèi dé lǎoshī yǔnxǔ bùdé líkāi jiàoshì — Without the teacher's permission, you are not allowed to leave the classroom.

  3. proper; suitable; (also proud, contented in some contexts)

    这件衣服很得体,适合正式场合。 zhèjiàn yīfú hěn détǐ shìhé zhèngshì chǎnghé — This outfit is very proper, suitable for formal occasions.

  4. ready; finished

    米饭蒸得了,可以开饭了。 mǐfàn zhēng dé le kěyǐ kāifàn le — The rice is ready; we can start eating.

得 — de

  1. structural particle (used after a verb/adjective to link to a phrase indicating degree, result, possibility, etc.)

    他跑得很快。 tā pǎo dé hěnkuài — He runs very fast.

得 — děi

  1. to have to; must; ought to; to need to (colloquial/multiregional: dei)

    时间不早了,我得走了。 shíjiān bùzǎole wǒ dé zǒu le — It's getting late; I have to go.

得 — dè

  1. used only in the colloquial expression 得瑟 (dése) 'to show off, to be cocky'

    他穿新鞋子到处得瑟。 tā chuān xīn xiézi dàochù dé sè — He struts around showing off his new shoes.
