   古代诸侯常常征伐邻国。 gǔdài zhūhóu chángcháng zhēngfá línguó — In ancient times lords often campaigned against neighboring states.

3. to invite; to recruit; to levy (taxes); to draft (troops)

   政府决定征税以资助公共工程。 zhèngfǔ juédìng zhēngshuì yǐ zīzhù gōnggòng gōngchéng — The government decided to levy taxes to fund public projects.
