影子 — yǐngzi

1. shadow (cast by an object blocking light)

   傍晚的树在地上投下长长的影子。 bàngwǎn de shù zài dìshàng tóuxià chángchángde yǐngzi — The tree cast a long shadow on the ground at dusk.

2. reflection (image seen on a surface of water, glass, mirror)

   湖面上能看到山的影子。 húmiàn shàng néng kàndào shān de yǐngzi — You can see the mountain's reflection on the lake.

3. a hint or sign of something (fig.), an indication

   他一点儿诚意的影子也没有。 tā yìdiǎnér chéngyì de yǐngzi yě méiyǒu — He doesn't show the slightest sign of sincerity.

4. influence, trace or vestige (fig.)—a remaining effect or presence

   改革的影子已经开始出现在村里的生活里。 gǎigé de yǐngzi yǐjīng kāishǐ chūxiàn zài cūnlǐ de shēnghuó lǐ — Signs of the reforms have begun to appear in village life.
