归 — guī

1. to return; to go back to

   他明天就要归家了。 tā míngtiān jiùyào guījiā le — He will return home tomorrow.

2. to give back to; to return (something)

   请把书归还图书馆。 qǐng bǎ shū guīhuán túshūguǎn — Please return the book to the library.

3. (of a responsibility) to be taken care of by; to fall to

   这个项目归财务部门管理。 zhège xiàngmù guī cáiwùbùmén guǎnlǐ — This project is managed by the finance department.

4. to belong to; to be part of

   这些费用归公司所有。 zhèxiē fèiyòng guī gōngsī suǒyǒu — These expenses belong to the company.

5. to gather together; to bring together

   大家把资料归拢一下。 dàjiā bǎ zīliào guīlǒng yīxià — Everyone, gather the materials together.

6. used between two identical verbs meaning 'despite' (grammar function)

   他说归说，事情还是没解决。 tā shuō guī shuō shìqíng háishì méi jiějué — He may talk and talk, but the matter still isn't resolved.

7. to marry (of a woman) (old-fashioned)

   古时女子十六七岁便要归于夫家。 gǔshí nǚzǐ shíliùqīsuì biàn yào guīyú fūjiā — In ancient times, a girl of sixteen or seventeen would marry into her husband's family.

8. division on the abacus with a one-digit divisor (technical/obscure)

   这种算术在教学中称为归法。 zhèzhǒng suànshù zài jiàoxué zhōng chēngwéi guīfǎ — This arithmetic method is called 'gui method' in teaching.

9. surname Gui

   归先生是我们新来的同事。 guī xiānshēng shì wǒmen xīn lái de tóngshì — Mr. Gui is our new colleague.
