弹 — tán

1. to pluck (a string); to play (a stringed instrument) by plucking

   他喜欢在晚上弹吉他放松。 tā xǐhuān zài wǎnshàng dàn jítā fàngsōng — He likes to play (pluck) the guitar at night to relax.

2. to spring or leap; to bounce

   球从墙上弹了回来。 qiú cóng qiángshàng dàn le huílái — The ball bounced back from the wall.

3. to shoot (e.g., with a catapult); to propel by a sudden movement

   士兵用弹弓弹石块攻城。 shìbīng yòng dàngōng dàn shíkuài gōngchéng — Soldiers used slings to shoot stones at the city.

4. to fluff or tease (cotton or fibers)

   工人把棉花弹松以便纺织。 gōngrén bǎ miánhuā dàn sōng yǐbiàn fǎngzhī — Workers teased the cotton to loosen it for spinning.

5. to flick; to flip (with a quick wrist or finger movement)
