弦 — xián

1. bow string (as on an archery bow)

   他拉紧了弓弦，准备射箭。 tā lājǐn le gōngxián zhǔnbèi shèjiàn — He tightened the bowstring, ready to shoot.

2. string of a musical instrument (e.g. guitar, violin string)

   小提琴的弦断了，我得去修。 xiǎotíqín de xián duàn le wǒ dé qù xiū — The violin string broke; I need to get it repaired.

3. watchspring (mainspring of a watch)

   钟表匠更换了表的弦以恢复走时。 zhōngbiǎojiàng gēnghuàn le biǎo de xián yǐ huīfù zǒushí — The watchmaker replaced the mainspring to restore timekeeping.

4. chord (segment joining two points on a curve)

   在圆里，弦连接圆周上的两点。 zài yuán lǐ xián liánjiē yuánzhōu shàng de liǎngdiǎn — In a circle, a chord joins two points on the circumference.

5. hypotenuse (in geometry)

   直角三角形的弦是最长的一边。 zhíjiǎosānjiǎoxíng de xián shì zuìzhǎng de yībiān — The hypotenuse of a right triangle is its longest side.
