开学 — kāixué

1. to start school; (of a semester) to begin

   下个月就要开学了。 xiàgèyuè jiùyào kāixué le — School is about to start next month.

2. (old) to found a school

   他年轻时回到家乡开学，培养了不少学生。 tā niánqīng shí huídào jiāxiāng kāixué péiyǎng le bùshǎo xuéshēng — When he was young he returned to his hometown to found a school and trained many students.

3. the start of a new term (the event/time)

   开学那天校园里到处都是新生和家长。 kāixué nàtiān xiàoyuán lǐ dàochù dōu shì xīnshēng hé jiāzhǎng — On the first day of term the campus was full of new students and parents.
