1. to open; to unlock; to unseal

   请帮我把门开一下。 qǐng bāng wǒ bǎmén kāi yīxià — Please open the door for me.

2. to start (a journey, expedition, operation); to set out

   舰队明早开航。 jiànduì míngzǎo kāiháng — The fleet will set sail tomorrow morning.

3. to turn on; to put into operation; to run (a machine, device, business)

   你会开这台机器吗？ nǐ huì kāi zhè tái jīqì ma — Do you know how to operate this machine?

4. to boil (as a verb meaning to bring to a boil)

   把水开了再放面。 bǎ shuǐ kāi le zài fàng miàn — Boil the water before adding the noodles.

5. to write out (a prescription, check, invoice)

   医生今天给他开了三天的药。 yīshēng jīntiān gěi tā kāi le sāntiān de yào — The doctor prescribed him medicine for three days today.

6. directional complement meaning away/off (used after a verb)
