   舞台上忽然出现了一个幻影，观众都感到惊讶。 wǔtái shàng hūrán chūxiàn le yígè huànyǐng guānzhòng dōu gǎndào jīngyà — A phantom suddenly appeared on stage, and the audience was astonished.

2. mirage; an optical illusion (e.g., in a desert)

   沙漠远处出现了幻影，实际上那只是热浪造成的海市蜃楼。 shāmò yuǎnchù chūxiàn le huànyǐng shíjìshàng nà zhǐshì rèlàng zàochéng de hǎishìshènlóu — A mirage appeared in the distance of the desert; in fact it was just a heat-induced illusion.
