1. fortunately; luckily

   幸亏你及时赶到，要不然后果就严重了。 xìngkuī nǐ jíshí gǎndào yàobùrán hòuguǒ jiù yánzhòng le — Fortunately you arrived in time; otherwise the consequences would have been serious.

2. used to introduce relief about an avoided negative outcome (colloquial)

   幸亏没听他的建议，否则我的计划可能会被打乱。 xìngkuī méi tīng tā de jiànyì fǒuzé wǒ de jìhuà kěnéng huì bèidǎluàn — Luckily I didn't follow his suggestion; otherwise my plan might have been disrupted.

3. (sometimes) used ironically when the outcome is actually bad

   你把工资花光了？幸亏啊！ nǐ bǎ gōngzī huāguāng le xìngkuī a — You spent your whole salary? How 'lucky'!

4. used before explaining why something was fortunate (linking function)

   幸亏有监控录像，我们才弄清楚事情的经过。 xìngkuī yǒu jiānkòng lùxiàng wǒmen cái nòngqīngchǔ shìqíng de jīngguò — Fortunately there was surveillance footage, so we clarified what happened.

5. often paired with 要不然/不然 to contrast the avoided result

   幸亏早点出发，要不然就赶不上火车了。 xìngkuī zǎodiǎn chūfā yàobùrán jiù gǎnbùshàng huǒchē le — Luckily we set off earlier; otherwise we would have missed the train.
