   他聪明并且勤奋，值得提拔。 tā cōngmíng bìngqiě qínfèn zhíde tíbá — He is smart and hardworking, worthy of promotion.

2. also; furthermore; (used for emphasis in negative constructions: not at all)

   我并不认识他说的那个人。 wǒ bìng bù rènshí tā shuō de nàge rén — I do not know the person he mentioned at all.

3. simultaneously; at the same time

   这两项工作可以并着做。 zhèliǎngxiàng gōngzuò kěyǐ bìng zhe zuò — These two tasks can be done simultaneously.

4. to combine; to join; to merge

   公司决定并两家分支机构以节约成本。 gōngsī juédìng bìng liǎngjiā fēnzhījīgòu yǐ jiéyuē chéngběn — The company decided to merge the two branches to save costs.

5. to combine; to amalgamate

   两家银行将并为一家大型金融机构。 liǎngjiā yínháng jiāng bìngwèi yījiā dàxíng jīnróngjīgòu — The two banks will amalgamate into a large financial institution.
