1. to subside; to die down (of wind, waves, emotions, etc.)

   风终于平息了，海面恢复了平静。 fēng zhōngyú píngxī le hǎimiàn huīfù le píngjìng — The wind finally died down and the sea returned to calm.

2. to quell; to put down; to smooth over (a dispute, rebellion, unrest)

   政府出动维稳力量，迅速平息了骚乱。 zhèngfǔ chūdòng wéi wěn lìliàng xùnsù píngxī le sāoluàn — The government deployed stability forces and quickly quelled the unrest.
