干燥 — gānzào

1. Dry; arid (of weather, climate, soil)

   这个地区夏季很干燥，降雨很少。 zhège dìqū xiàjì hěn gānzào jiàngyǔ hěnshǎo — This region is very dry in summer; there is little rainfall.

2. Dry (of skin, mouth, throat); lacking moisture

   冬天屋子里空气干燥，皮肤容易起皮。 dōngtiān wūzilǐ kōngqì gānzào pífū róngyì qǐpí — In winter the air indoors is dry, and the skin easily peels.

3. Figurative: dry; dull; boring (lacking interest or excitement)

   这本教科书内容干燥，读起来很乏味。 zhèběn jiàokēshū nèiróng gānzào dú qǐlái hěn fáwèi — The textbook's content is dry and tedious to read.

4. To dry out; to season; to cure (of timber, food etc)

   木材要先干燥再加工，否则会开裂。 mùcái yào xiān gānzào zài jiāgōng fǒuzé huì kāiliè — Timber must be dried before processing, otherwise it will crack.
