1. military commander at the level of a division (commander of a shī)

   他被任命为师长，负责该师的全面工作。 tā bèi rènmìng wèi shīzhǎng fùzé gāi shī de quánmiàn gōngzuò — He was appointed division commander, responsible for the division's overall work.

2. teacher; senior figure in charge of students (honorific or institutional term)

   学生们都尊敬这位年长的师长。 xuéshēng men dōu zūnjìng zhèwèi niánzhǎng de shīzhǎng — The students all respect this elder teacher/senior in charge.
