差 — chà

1. different; wrong; mistaken; not up to standard; inferior

   这件衣服的颜色和图片上差得远。 zhèjiàn yīfú de yánsè hé túpiàn shàng chàdeyuǎn — The color of this garment is far from the picture.

2. to fall short; to lack; to be inferior to

   这次考试我的分数差了及格线三分。 zhècì kǎoshì wǒ de fēnshù chà le jígéxiàn sānfēn — In this exam I fell three points short of the passing mark.

差 — chā

1. difference; discrepancy; (math) difference (amount remaining after a subtraction)

   这两个数的差是五。 zhè liǎnggè shù de chà shì wǔ — The difference between these two numbers is five.

2. a little; somewhat; slightly (literary/colloquial)

   我差点忘了他的生日。 wǒ chàdiǎn wàng le tā de shēngrì — I almost forgot his birthday.

差 — chāi

1. to send (on an errand); (archaic) person sent on such an errand; job; official post

   他差人去市场买菜。 tā chāirén qù shìchǎng mǎicài — He sent someone to the market to buy vegetables.

差 — cī

1. used in the compound 参差|參差 (cēncī) meaning 'uneven; jagged; irregular'

   山路参差不齐，很难通车。 shānlù cēncībùqí hěn nán tōngchē — The mountain road is uneven and hard for vehicles to pass.
