1. prefecture; administrative region (in China, Japan historically)

   这个州有很多小城市。 zhège zhōu yǒu hěnduō xiǎo chéngshì — This prefecture has many small towns.

2. (old) province; (old) administrative division

   在古代，国家被分为若干个州。 zài gǔdài guójiā bèi fēnwéi ruògāngè zhōu — In ancient times, the country was divided into several provinces.

3. state (e.g. of the US)

   加利福尼亚州人口众多。 jiālìfúníyàzhōu rénkǒuzhòngduō — The state of California has a large population.

4. oblast (Russia); region-level division in some countries
