   古代山寨常建在山上，地势险要，便于防守。 gǔdài shānzhài cháng jiànzài shānshàng dìshì xiǎnyào biànyú fángshǒu — Ancient mountain strongholds were often built on hills, with dangerous terrain that made them easy to defend.

2. knockoff; counterfeit; imitation (informal, of goods or products)

   这款包的做工太差，一看就是山寨货。 zhèkuǎn bāo de zuògōng tàichà yī kàn jiùshì shānzhài huò — The workmanship on this bag is terrible; it's obviously a knockoff.
