属 — shǔ

1. category; genus; taxonomic group

   这几种植物属于同一属。 zhè jǐzhòng zhíwù shǔyú tóng yī shǔ — These species of plants belong to the same genus.

2. family members; dependents (people who belong to a household or family group)

   他带着家属一起搬到了新城市。 tā dài zhe jiāshǔ yìqǐ bāndào le xīn chéngshì — He moved to the new city together with his family dependents.

3. to belong to; to be subordinate to; to be affiliated with

   这家公司属国家所有。 zhèjiā gōngsī shǔ guójiāsuǒyǒu — This company belongs to the state.

4. to be born in the year of (one of the 12 zodiac animals)

   我属龙，明年是我的本命年。 wǒ shǔ lóng míngnián shì wǒ de běnmìngnián — I was born in the Year of the Dragon; next year is my zodiac year.

5. to be; to prove to be; to constitute (used in formal constructions)

   此行为属违法，应予处罚。 cǐ xíngwéi shǔ wéifǎ yīngyǔ chǔfá — This act constitutes a violation of the law and should be punished.

   这篇文章前后相属，结构十分严谨。 zhè piānwénzhāng qiánhòu xiāng shǔ jiégòu shífēn yánjǐn — This essay is well connected from beginning to end, with a rigorous structure.

2. to fix one's attention on; to concentrate on

   他属意于眼前的考试，请别打扰。 tā zhǔyìyú yǎnqián de kǎoshì qǐng bié dǎrǎo — He is focusing his attention on the upcoming exam, so please don't disturb him.
