尖 — jiān

1. pointed; tapering; sharp (edge)

   这把刀很尖。 zhè bǎ dāo hěn jiān — This knife is very sharp.

2. (of a sound) shrill; piercing

   她的声音很尖，听得让人不舒服。 tā de shēngyīn hěn jiān tīng dé ràng rén bù shūfú — Her voice is very shrill; it's unpleasant to hear.

3. sharp; acute (of hearing, sight, senses)

   他的听觉很尖，能分辨很远处的声音。 tā de tīngjué hěn jiān néng fēnbiàn hěn yuǎnchù de shēngyīn — His hearing is sharp; he can distinguish sounds from far away.

4. to make (one's voice) shrill; to produce a sharp/piercing sound

   他一激动就把声音尖了起来。 tā yī jīdòng jiù bǎ shēngyīn jiān le qǐlái — When he gets excited he makes his voice shrill.

5. sharp point; tip

   这支笔的尖断了，需要换笔芯。 zhè zhī bǐ de jiān duàn le xūyào huàn bǐxīn — The tip of this pen broke; it needs a refill/cartridge.

6. the best of something; top-notch (colloquial: the cream of the crop)

   这家公司的设计很尖，产品在市场上很受欢迎。 zhèjiā gōngsī de shèjì hěn jiān chǎnpǐn zài shìchǎng shàng hěn shòuhuānyíng — This company's designs are top-notch; their products are popular on the market.
